Event Description: 2009 Thursdays at the Intervale: The Summer of Taste Support the Intervale and be part of this popular community event series! 5:30 p.m. Slow Food VT tastings ? 6 p.m. Programs/activities ? 6:30 p.m. Live music The Intervale Center’s popular summer event and music series begins its sixth year on July 9 and we are inviting you to be a special part of this exciting program as a Thursdays Season Pass Holder. Each Thursday evening from July 9 to August 27 features a wide range of fun and tasty activities, including: • Taste tests by Slow Food Vermont • Activities and programs related to local food, the local economy, land stewardship, and/or Intervale Center programs • Fun kids’ games • Great live music The events are held in the in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere of the Calkins Community Barn, adjacent to the Intervale Center’s farmhouse office, while outside the crew from American Flatbread serves up flatbread from their mobile wood-fired hearth. Thursdays at the Intervale is a Burlington summer favorite with music lovers and families looking for a safe and environmentally-friendly place to explore, picnic and play. We have been putting on these fun community events for six years and they just keep getting better! Although free in the past, this year we are suggesting a $5 donation per family to help pay for the events and to support the work of the Intervale Center. JULY 9 Summer of Taste panel “Why Taste is Important” with farmers, chefs and Slow Food Vermont Tasting: Carrots Abenaki Traditional Garden presentation - 6:30 p.m. Abenaki Circle Of Courage Youth Dancers - 6:45 p.m. Music: Join us in opening the Thursdays summer season with a Community Open Mic - 7:30 p.m. (Sign up required for open mic: 802-999-5831) JULY 16 Bees and a healthy food system Tasting: Vermont cheese Music: Come a dancin’ with your sweetie, friends, and kids to the honky tonk harmonies of Me & You, featuring Brett Hughes and Marie Claire JULY 23 Kids Circus Thursday: Kids and adults join in a dance and drum workshop with Jeh Kulu Dance and Drum Theater (6:30 p.m.), Learn to make and toss juggling balls, watch a puppet show, learn a tap dance or two, and sharpen balance skills with tricklining, a more flexible and low-to-the-ground form of tightrope walking. Tasting: Vermont wines and ciders, and special kids tasting JULY 30 Land of the Intervale with Intervale Conservation Nursery tree walk and Abenaki Traditional Garden tours (5:30-7 p.m.) Tasting: Vermont beer and root beer Music: “A songster, a performer, and advocate for the freedom of inhibited and conformed souls...,” don’t miss the powerful and breathtaking voice of Joshua Panda, Burlington’s soul man.Book Signing: "Lifting the Yoke" by Ron Krupp AUGUST 6 New Farms for New Americans with presentation, slide show, food, music, and more! Tasting: Vermont maple Music: There’s nothing better than an old barn and the traditional sounds of The Pickpockets with Brent Weaver on guitar, Jonathan Leonard on mandolin, bouzouki and vocals, James Barnes on banjo and vocals, and Audrey Barnes on vocals. AUGUST 13 Your Food, Your Community with Burlington Permaculture, Grow Team ONE, Burlington Food Council, Friends of Burlington Gardens, BACG, and the Intervale Center Tasting: Heritage chickens and pork Music: Don’t miss the lip smackin’ jams and tightly crafted grooves of The Grift with Clint Bierman on guitar & vocals, Jeff Vallone on drums, samples and vocals, Ryan Erskine on keys, and Peter Day on bass, trumpet, and vocals. AUGUST 20 Local Business = Living Economies with Vermont Sustainable Exchange, Local First Vermont, and Burlington Timebanks Tasting: Heirloom apples Music: The Xander Naylor Trio pulls inspiration as much from rock, grunge, noise, and ambient genres as they do from the traditions of jazz. Composer and guitarist Xander Naylor provides the majority of the material. Ian Kovac on upright bass and Peter Negroponte on drum flesh out the sound and hold the grooves tight. AUGUST 27 Farmer Appreciation Night Tasting: Heirloom Tomatoes Barn Dance and Open Music Circle: Enjoy Old Time and Cajun music with Mark Sustic on bass, Brianna Farver on fiddle, Andrew Hathaway on guitar, Julia Wayne on banjo/mandolin, and guest callers. Bring instruments for our Farmer’s Night Open Music Circle.
